Small Batch Red Velvet Cookies
Celebrate Valentine’s Day with these small batch red velvet cookies. The white chocolate chips are the perfect touch!

Are you excited about Valentine’s Day? It’s always been one of my favourite holidays of the year. I love celebrating love – whether that’s making cards with my boys or baking up red and pink desserts. Since baking is my love language, these cookies are pure perfection!
My red velvet cookies are dotted with bright white chocolate chips, which makes them pop off the plate! As they bake, the entire kitchen smells like chocolate – oh it’s so good and so hard to wait until they cool off enough to eat. You’re going to love them!
What Does Red Velvet Taste Like?
Funny story. Red velvet isn’t an actual flavor. Nope! It’s chocolate with red food coloring. So, red velvet tastes like chocolate. Crazy, I know!

But that’s why I love them. They’re perfect for red-themed holidays (like Valentine’s Day or Canada Day). And everyone loves the rich, chocolate flavor of a red velvet dessert.
Are you a fan of red velvet desserts? If so, take a peek at my recipe for Red Velvet Brownies next. They’re topped with Oreos and are just as incredible as these cookies. Make them both for Valentine’s Day!
Small Batch Cookies
This is a small batch recipe. That means it will only give you a small amount of dough and about one pan of cookies. It’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t have a ton of time to bake pan after pan of cookies.

I prefer small batch baking because it’s faster from start to finish. My entire kitchen is clean in the time it would take me to bake a big batch of cookies.
If you need to bake a few dozen cookies, then I suggest doubling this recipe.
What Ingredients Do I Need To Make Red Velvet Cookies?
If you love to bake, then you probably already have everything you need. Here’s what I used when I made these scrumptious cookies.
- Flour
- Cocoa Powder
- Salt
- Baking Soda
- Butter
- Brown Sugar
- Granulated Sugar
- Buttermilk
- Egg
- Red Gel Food Coloring
- White Chocolate Chips

How Long Will The Cookies Last?
There are two ways to store the red velvet cookies. Keep the baked cookies in a sealed container at room temperature. They will stay fresh for about a week this way.
If you need them to last longer, then freeze them. Place them in a food-safe freezer bag. They will stay fresh in the freezer for about six months.
Why Do You Use Buttermilk In Red Velvet Cookies?
Buttermilk does two things for the cookies. It helps the cookies rise (so they aren’t super flat) and helps the dough stick together better. It’s pretty common to use buttermilk in chocolate chip or sugar cookies.
If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own. Just add a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of regular milk.

You only need one teaspoon of buttermilk for this recipe, so I would cut that amount in half and then save it to use in other recipes.
How To Make Red Velvet Cookies
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Then, in a small bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking soda. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, add butter and both sugars and whisk until well incorporated. Add the buttermilk and stir, followed by the egg.

Next, add red gel food coloring and mix until wet batter is completely tinted.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a nice, thick cookie dough forms.
Fold in white chocolate chips. Once all ingredients are well-incorporated with one another, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 8 to 11 minutes. Enjoy!
