Mixed Berry Crumble

This fresh and light dessert is actually good for you too! Use your favorite berries to make a mixed berry crumble that makes everyone smile.

Juicy strawberries, plump blueberries, and a cinnamon-sugar oat crumble topping — this Mixed Berry Crumble is pure comfort in a dish. No fancy skills required, just simple, cozy baking you’ll want to make on repeat.

There’s something about juicy berries that screams summertime! You can usually find the freshest berries at the farmer’s market. They taste so much better when they’re in season that I end up buying a double batch. Some for the recipe and some for snacking!

Even though there are bunches of different ways to bake berry-themed desserts, a crumble has to be one of my all-time favorites. It’s so easy that you can do it with kids “helping” in the kitchen. And this berry crumble is ready in just 45 minutes.

I’m all about easy recipes that taste indulgent. And that’s exactly what this is! Top it with some ice cream and you’re in dessert Heaven. While you’re baking up fruity desserts, try my orange upside-down cake next. It’s perfectly sweet without being too rich. You’re gonna love it!

Easy Berry Crisp

Do you know the difference between a crumble and a crisp? Honestly, they are basically the same thing. Both desserts feature sweet, juicy fruit with a crispy topping that’s baked.

But a crumble has a streusel topping that’s made with flour, butter, and sugar. A crisp uses oats.

Since I used oats in my topping, this is technically a mixed berry crisp. But we can call it a crumble, too!

So many people use the terms interchangeably. It’s ok if you use both terms, too. But one thing this recipe will never be is a fruit cobbler. A cobbler is a deep-dish dessert that’s topped with a sweet biscuit-like dough.

Best Berries For A Crumble

What are the best kinds of berries to use in a fruit crumble? Any that you want! I used sliced strawberries and blueberries.

You could use all of your favorite berries together, too. Try it with raspberries, blackberries, and a few cherries.

What about apples or peaches? Yes, you can use any type of fresh fruit. The most important thing is that you limit the amount to 3-4 cups to keep the ratios the same.

Here are some more tips for berry crumble:

  • Use similar types of fruit together: Don’t mix berries with stone fruit.
  • Fresh is best. Use fresh fruit for the best results.
  • Frozen berries are good too. If you use frozen berries, let them thaw completely and then pat them dry with a paper towel.

How Long Will The Crumble Last?

It tastes so good that you probably won’t have any leftovers to store. But, if you do, please keep it refrigerated. Store the berry crisp in an airtight conatiner and keep it in the refrigerator for a max of three days.

If you need the crisp to last longer, then freeze it. Place it in a food-safe freezer container. It will stay fresh in the freezer for about six months.

Can You Make Crumble Bars?

Yes…kind of. I mean, you could cut them into bars and serve them that way. But this is a really messy recipe and it won’t stay in the shape of a bar! That’s the best part about them – digging your fork into the gooey fruit and crispy streusel topping.

If you want individual portions, bake them in a muffin tin. Make tiny little mini crumbles.

Or bake them in oven-safe ramekins. This will also give you mini berry crisps that you can serve at parties (or give yourself for portion control).

How To Make A Mixed Berry Crumble

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees and spraying a small casserole dish with cooking spray. Set aside.

Begin with your berry base: in a small bowl, add berries, followed by granulated sugar, flour and ground cinnamon. Fold so that all of the berries are evenly coated with sugar and flour mixture.

Pour the berry base into the coated casserole dish, ensuring it is even and completely covering the bottom of the dish. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, mxi together brown sugar, oats and all-purpose flour.

Next, add sliced butter (make sure it’s still cold), and use a pastry cutter to incorporate it with the brown sugar mixture.

Evenly add the butter, oat and brown sugar mixture on top of the berry layer, covering it completely and evenly.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Allow 5 to 10 minutes to cool before serving.
