So Wait… Cookie Dough is Freezable?

Absolutely! Whether you’re meal prepping for the week, baking ahead for the holidays, or simply saving leftovers, freezing cookie dough is one of the easiest ways to make homemade baking more convenient.

In fact, many cookie dough recipes taste even better after being frozen because the dough has extra time to rest, allowing the flavors to develop (especially when you’re using softened butter vs. melted butter).

Which Types of Cookie Dough Can We Freeze?

Great news is that most cookie dough freezes exceptionally well. This includes classics like:

  • Chocolate chip cookies
  • Sugar cookies
  • Peanut butter cookies
  • Oatmeal cookies
  • M&M cookies
  • Double chocolate cookies
  • Sprinkle cookies

If you’re unsure, a good rule of thumb is that if the dough is firm enough to scoop, it can usually be frozen successfully.

Is It Better to Freeze Cookie Dough Before or After Scooping?

Whenever possible, freeze cookie dough after you’ve scooped it into portions.

This makes baking incredibly easy later since you can simply grab however many cookie dough balls you need.

Instead of thawing an entire batch, you can bake just two cookies… or two dozen.

How to Freeze Cookie Dough Step by Step

1. Prepare the dough

Mix your cookie dough according to the recipe.

2. Scoop the dough

Use a cookie scoop to portion the dough into evenly sized balls.

3. Flash freeze

Place the cookie dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet so they aren’t touching.

Freeze for 1–2 hours, or until completely firm.

4. Transfer to a freezer bag

Once frozen solid, transfer the cookie dough balls to a freezer-safe zip-top bag or airtight container.

Label the bag with:

  • Cookie name
  • Date
  • Baking temperature
  • Approximate baking time

Future you will thank you!

How Long Can Cookie Dough Stay Frozen?

For the best flavor and texture, use frozen cookie dough within 3 months.

It will often remain safe to eat for longer if stored properly, but the quality may gradually decline over time.

Can You Bake Cookie Dough Straight From Frozen?

Absolutely… there’s usually no need to thaw frozen cookie dough.

All you have to do is simply place the frozen dough balls on your baking sheet and bake as directed (in a preheated oven, of course).

You may need to add an extra one to three minutes to the baking time, depending on the size of the cookies.

Should You Thaw Cookie Dough Before Baking?

Most drop cookies don’t need to be thawed.

However, if you’re working with:

  • Slice-and-bake cookie dough
  • Roll-out sugar cookies
  • Cut-out cookies

Allow the dough to soften slightly in the refrigerator before rolling or slicing.

Common Mistakes When Freezing Cookie Dough

Skipping the flash freeze

If you place soft dough directly into a freezer bag, the cookie dough balls will stick together.

Forgetting to label the bag

After a few weeks, frozen dough often looks the same! Always include the type of cookie, its baking temperature, and date.

Keeping dough too long

While frozen dough stays safe for quite some time, using it within three months gives the best results.
